January 2012

Our January meeting had a low turnout, maybe due to the weather. There were 9 members in attendance.

The business meeting started at 7:30. President Tony Noice was absent due to other commitments so Vice President Don Clancy presided over the meeting.

1. Discussed at the meeting once again, how to rebuild the membership

2. Perks and enrich member’s experience.

3.  Increase benefits to members.

4. It was discussed that maybe we could have one or two lectures in the year.

5. Dues were collected and still remained at $20.00 per year.

6. VA Hospital program in July.

7. Bob Syrup appointed to the Good will and Welfare. (He will keep us posted.)

That concluded the business meeting and at 8:00PM our members performed their Impromptu or pocket magic.

First up was Rudy Alfano who performed the mouse trap effect where a twenty dollar bill was attached to the mouse trap and asked anyone if they wanted to try their luck on removing the twenty dollar bill. (There were no takers)

Next up was Don Clancy who did: -Floating Computer Disk with borrowed disk

-"Got Milk"-vanishing milk container from bag (Make a trick)

                                               -Silk from dollar ( a walk-around trick)

                                               -Matching Card(s) in the pocket

Then came Gordon Gluff. Gordon did Tenkai pennys, rubber band penetration thru thumb, his version were a dollar bill that is secured by 2 paper clips to a rubber band comes free leaving the rubber band and paper clips linked together.

Next, Bob Syrup did an effect from Ken Brooke called Clockaudacious.  It's a clock effect trick where all the cards in the deck turn out to be Jokers except the selected card. Great effect and did not see the ending coming.

Ending up with Bob Coluzzi doing the 16 card effect were he had 4 spectators each take 4 cards out of the deck, concentrate on one card, then mix the cards up. Bob took back the packets, had another spectator to advise what spot the cards showed be laid down in 1,2,3,or 4 position. He then picked up the piles and, one at a time, pulled a card out without looking at them and named each of the cards chosen.  Bob had instruction sheets which he passed out to the members.

The meeting ended at 9:00 PM.

That concluded the evening entertainment and the members gathered around, mingled, and finished off all the goodies that were provided.

We are trying to rebuild our membership. If you know of a member that has dropped out of the club, please talk to them and see if you can get them to come back. I will also be doing a mailing inviting past members back. We are setting up some great programs for the coming year and want everyone to be part of it.

I have also made arrangements with The New Mazda Mystic Ring for SAM 148 members to have access to their DVD library of over 2300 titles. Mazda buys one to for DVD’s a month for the library. December 2011

Being your newly elected secretary, I would like to say that I will try and keep you all updated with all previous meetings and all up and coming meetings.

Starting with our SAM 148 Christmas Party, with a very nice turnout of 27 members and guests, the party started around 7:15 PM with lots of appetizers, deserts, Salsa, Chips, Shrimp Tray, and a cheese tray. Then came the main entrée which was 4 kinds of pizza for every ones taste.

A few members were doing tricks at different tables before and during the party, before we got on with the main entertainment of the evening. The entertainment started off with Rudy Alfano doing a card trick with 5 spectators. Each picked a small packet of cards from the deck; they shuffled them and were told to remember one card. Cards were then collected and Rudy attempted to find their card.

Next up was Don Clancy doing a Light Bulb Trick. Next he performed a card trick where, at the end, the two cards matched. Next he did a 3 king card trick where the kings vanished, one at a time, and the last one turned into a joker. Next Don finished with a coin routine where three coins vanished, one at a time, until he was left with none in his hands.

Up next was Jim Geppert with a card trick where, at the end, both cards matched. Next Jim had a spectator deal cards onto the table and was told to stop at any time. Spectator took that card and the rest of the cards were then placed in the deck. Jim had made a prediction earlier and at the end, both cards matched.

Next came Frank Kay (Another Card Trick). A spectator picked a card then replaced it back into the deck. Frank then asked if the card was red and pulled out the spectator’s card which had a red back that was taken out of a blue back deck. Next Frank did the stickman card effect were the stick man on the card was a snowman.

Next up was Tony Noice. Tony had a spectator shuffle the cards and retain one. Cards were placed back into the deck and when the cards were spread, the spectator’s card was between two kings. This time the card was placed back into the deck and Tony had the two kings find the spectator’s card.

Closing the evening’s entertainment was yours truly (Bob Coluzzi). Bob started out saying there are two things a magician must do to accomplish his tricks. First, he must memorize the deck and know where each card is in the deck; second, he must predict the future. Bob showed a jumbo deck, stated the easy way to memorize is to number the cards on the back. He had a spectator call out any card in the deck; this card was taken out and placed on an easel. A second spectator also named a card and that card was placed on the easel. The same was done with the third spectator. He then proceeded to take out an 8x10 photo with a photo of the backs of three cards with the numbers on them. He then turned over the cards, one by one, and all the cards matched (THE FUTURE).

Next he had a spectator take any card from the deck, remember it and concentrate on it. He then named the card the spectator had... He then proceeded to have another spectator take out a batch of card of 5 or 6, had the spectator shuffle the cards, and then proceeded to name all the cards in the spectator’s hand.

Last effect again was a test of his physic ability. He handed a block of wood with six ESP symbols on it. He also handed a small wooden box to the spectator and told her to place the block into the box and cover it while he went back up front. Still with his back to the audience, he told the spectator to concentrate on the symbol. After a few moments, he named the symbol she had placed in the box.

That concluded the evening’s entertainment. The members gather around, mingled, and finished off all the goodies that were provided.

We are trying to rebuild our membership. If you know of a member that has dropped out of the club, please talk to them and see if you can get them to come back. I will also be doing a mailing inviting past members back. We are setting up some great programs for the coming year and want everyone to be part of it.

I have also made arrangements with The New Mazda Mystic Ring, for SAM 148 members to have access to their DVD library of over 2300 titles. Mazda buys one to four DVD’s a month for the library. I want to thank you all again for electing me as secretary and putting your faith in me.

Let’s not forget the people that do a lot for the club and don’t get the recognition they deserve..

November 21, 2011

Our last full meeting of the year was called to order at 7:30 PM by president Tony Noice. The first order of business was to hold an election for officers for the coming year. Tony Noice ran unopposed and was promptly seconded. Don Clancy was nominated and subsequently seconded as the new vice president, replacing Dave Burn. Bob Coluzzi was reluctantly nominated and seconded as the new secretary and Dave Schleich was reaffirmed as treasurer. So these are the new officers for 2012. Congratulations!

Near the end of the meeting, we were informed that Father Kurt was recovering at Marianjoy Rehabilitation Center after undergoing replacement of his left knee. All our thoughts and prayers are with him!

After the meeting was officially adjourned and a short recess was taken, it was time for the main event, a lecture by Devin Knight! He opened by taking a working lightbulb out of the fixture, placing it in a paper bag, emptying a full salt shaker into his hand, making the salt disappear, removing the light bulb from the bag and subsequently pouring the salt out of it! A very cool effect! He continued on demonstrating Blind Sight, a “non-card” trick, a really convincing auto-bending spoon, the baby picture gag with a Jay Leno kicker, Predictionary, Food for Thought , and Retro-sight. To finish up, Devin pulled out the hard core mentalism which included Outta Sight, Word Sight and Double Coincidence. These effects are all over You Tube and other places so I’m not going to bother going into detail about them.

Everybody from SAM148 would like to thank Devin for visiting, we had a wonderful time! Remember to mark you calendar for December 19. That is the date for out annual Christmas party! Make sure you bring something edible to share!
